Sourced and written from hundreds of research papers and dozens of interviews the book chronicles, in layman’s terms, a history of the unwelcome appearance of red tide and blue-green algae in southwest Florida’s coastal estuaries beginning in the 16th century up until the present day.

5 STAR REVIEW

Problems we can fix if we choose to

Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2020

"With this book, Penniman continues his series of well researched books on our relationship with the environment. He begins with a parable, the story of Dorothy, a sea turtle whose short life ends in a sea of red tide. Her death is inexplicable. She has the capability to swim away from the red peril, but appears to chose not to. As Penniman’s story of science and politics runs its course, we see our own kind capable of swimming away from the peril but choosing not to. In our case, of course, the peril is largely of our own making. But all is not lost. His story ends on a hopeful note as Florida’s political forces seem to acknowledge the corner that we have waded into."

ABOUT THE BOOK

Our future as a species depends upon a safe and available supply of fresh water. While over 70% of the planet is covered by water, only a little more than 2% is fresh, and less than half of that is easily accessible, with the rest being trapped in glaciers and snow at the polar extremes. One might argue that global warming will eventually melt the ice caps, but flowing in liquid form it will be quickly absorbed by and integrated into the world’s oceans unless we find the means to trap and transport it to populated parts of the planet.

In a way, we are trapped in a situation from which we can escape but choose not to. We are caught in something we created. To break out of it will take time and money and a willingness to shed the mantle of comfortable complacency that allows us to believe the solution belongs to the next generation.

It does not. It belongs to us.
